They say some cultures believe you steal their soul when snapping their picture. Find out how to interact with the locals without dooming them to limbo.

Other than fellow foreign backpackers, my early photo albums rarely have shots of actual people.

Only by ferry or seaplane can you access the beautiful San Juan Islands and that is what makes this

destination so special and pristine. The San Juan Islands are made up of Lopez, Orcas, Shaw and San Juan Island. Orcas Island to many is home to the mighty killer whale and one can watch them cruise the shoreline either by sea kayak and sometimes from land. Lopez Island is the most rural of the three major islands and offers the visitor frequent viewings of bald eagles, otters, seals and the orca whale. Shaw Island is definitely the quietest of all the islands offering the visitor a primitive environment where one can totally detach from reality and let go.

One of my favorite singers, Robbie Williams, complains in one of his songs that love is getting too cynical, while passion is just physical.
Each of us has a different experience related to both love and passion. If we look carefully at what is happening in the world around us at this moment, and especially in the Western hemisphere, one can conclude that the concept of love is undergoing serious changes.

Knowing ourselves and our communities, and seeing them in unison, is the first step in fostering the divine world spirit.
A wise Indian man once said to me, “Perfection is a rare and sporadic event.” For travelers especially, this rings true.
From a traveler’s perspective, every foreign country is a chance for something to go ridiculously, horribly amok.

The return home rarely transports the traveler back to the place where his journey first began. To travel full-circle would entail the total absence of a journey. It would be the result of never venturing anywhere new.
The essence of a journey is this strange process of return??where one travels beyond the expected destination and learns to embrace change; its strange faces and cultures and unspoken encounters with fate.

During my first class teaching English in Taiwan, my student Christine came up to me with an armload of Chinese books, and hand-calligraphed New Year??s scrolls.
She also provided an invitation for language exchange and a smile, which can only be described as the Cheshire cat??s official welcome to Asia.
Cats are lucky in Taiwan, I??d heard, and I now believe this to be true - along with the idea that relationships proceed a lot more quickly when you speak each other??s languages.

Television news bombards us daily with images of global destruction, famine, disease, and wars.
No wonder we despair at the future mankind is forging for itself, one filled with hopelessness and religious fanatics hiding behind guns.
However, what the news does not show is a modified trend amongst the citizens of the world - a transfer from salvation to liberation; a change in mindset and taking responsibility, teaching other like-minded individuals by example.

Now almost one year old, your favourite travel web-zine is expanding!
I’ve had the privilege of hiring two new members to our team:
Tim Patterson (Co-Editor) - You may know Tim from his weekly Tales from the Road roundups and his articles in various magazines like Get Lost and now SF Chronicle.
Tim will help edit and prepare new BNT articles for publishing, which saves me from being buried under the avalanche of great content that you’re all sending in.

Avoid Sickness In Paradise: Prevent Jet Lag
One of the worst parts of air travel is handling jet lag. Jet lag is basically your body??s inability to adjust to the destination??s time as it passes through multiple time zones. For the inexperienced traveler (and some experienced ones) it can put a cramp in your business or holiday plans especially if your trip is only a few days. The main symptoms of jet lag are fatigue and tiredness. This can be accompanied by headaches, dizziness, muscle soreness, a feeling of sickness and odd eating patterns. Being tired while on your holiday, especially if you??re planning on doing a lot of sightseeing or physical activity can make if difficult to have an enjoyable time.To prevent jet lag you have to start before your trip. Ensure you are relaxed and stress free before you leave for the airport. Don??t drink caffeinated drinks and while alcohol may relax you it also dehydrates which can contribute to jet lag. Also consider doing some light exercise such as yoga or running but nothing that will make your muscles sore. Exercising aids your body??s sleep patterns.Once on your flight, try to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Consider accessories that will help you such as neck pillows and eye masks. Take off your shoes and get pillows and blankets before the plane takes off. Since dehydration contributes to jet lag, bring a large bottle of water. Drink lots of water even if you don??t feel thirsty. After take off, set your watch to the destination time. The rule of thumb is to sleep if it??s bed time at your destination and stay awake (or just take a small nap) if not. If you need to sleep consider taking a light sleep aid and if you??re worried about missing the meal service then just let the cabin crew know to wake you. Again, avoid consuming alcohol. It may help you sleep but in the long run it will make jet lag worse. If you feel like a drink then just have one and drink extra water to keep hydrated. If you??re awake, get out of your seat and do some simple stretches to reduce muscle tension.
