I’m writing from behind the reception desk here at El Diablo Tranquilo hostel in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay.
Every day a new group of travelers arrives in this chill little beach town. Some are seasoned solo travelers, like the sea captain who cleaned out a group of earnest Swedes in Texas Hold ‘Em last night, or the Alaskan mountain guide who winters in South America. Others are backpackers, traveling in groups, red-faced under their massive mochillas.

Sometimes during the summer months I do a few of the sidewalk art shows near where I live.
This gives me a chance to sell a few photos and chit-chat with the general public. I rarely sell much, but I have a lot of fun. Invariably, some of the passers-by will inquire as to what type of camera I use.
My usual reply is that I have a middle-of-the-line point and shoot. That satisfies about half of the inquirers. The rest, of course, need to know brand, make and model and all the other technical ins and outs of my digital shadow catcher.

During our trip to Paris last Christmas we were repeatedly told to save our shopping receipts to present during our airport departure, thus allowing us to receive a refund on some of our taxed purchases.? As you already know, most countries employ a similar program.? We were further informed that this refund booth was located behind the security check points.? Despite arriving at the airport before 6 am, it was crowded!
We utilized Line #1 to per-cure our “carry-on” security stickers, Line #2 to obtain our boarding pass and present our additional “check-able” luggage, and Line#3 to actual be screened by security.? The attendant’s “pat-down” was so thorough, and my patience so low, that I told him that he should “at least buy me a drink first!”? He was not as amused as I was.?

I spent my first long term backpacking trip making backpacker mistakes that seem all too obvious in retrospect.
Yet judging by many other travelers I’ve met on the road, I wasn??t the only one learning the hard way.
Now that I??m older and wiser (ok, just older) I??ve learned the error of my ways and feel the need to pass on some sage advice.
