The Internet has made it much easier for writers to break into the world of publishing. As an aspiring writer myself, I’ve spent countless hours exploring every website imaginable, all of which promise the key to success.
Websites such as Matador Travel, Transitions Abroad, and EditRED provide opportunities to hone your journalistic endeavors.
Perhaps the most useful skill I travel can carry is knowledge of the local language.
It can open up a startling range of opportunities, ease the strain of logistics and planning, and allow you to develop a deeper connection with the place and, more importantly, the people you are visiting.
With a little advanced planning, and an introduction to the basics, it can be surprisingly easy to pick up a language on the road.
The internet has totally changed travel. It has made it easy to keep in touch with people back home as well as keep up with what is going on around the world.
For some, this can be overwhelming. Here are some tips I’ve discovered from traveling with a laptop for the last seven months. While many of these are laptop specific, some will be useful even if you only visit an internet cafe occasionally.

One thing I’ve learned since quitting my day job and becoming a full-time travel writer: the future of travel writing, travel guides and travel communities is online.
It’s nice to get published in traditional print media, if only because it gives me something to show my technologically oblivious Grandmother, but there’s no doubt that we’re at the tail-end of dead-tree press.
