Being fluent in English is like laying on an inflatable raft in the middle of an ocean.
It’s easy; it’s comfortable, and it gets you places. But I’m addicted to the process of looking at a symbol that means nothing and unlocking it until I lose access to that meaninglessness.

English is spoken in every major city in the world, especially tourist destinations. Terry Dip thinks there’s a problem with that.

Paris. At a cafe outside the Pantheon, I see a group of Japanese tourists, all women between their 20??s and 50??s, telling a waiter in broken English, ???Something to drink, please?? non-alcoholic.???

Perhaps the most useful skill I travel can carry is knowledge of the local language.
It can open up a startling range of opportunities, ease the strain of logistics and planning, and allow you to develop a deeper connection with the place and, more importantly, the people you are visiting.
With a little advanced planning, and an introduction to the basics, it can be surprisingly easy to pick up a language on the road.

In this day and age it??s possible to travel around the world - from Ushuaia to Ulaan Baatar - and speak nothing but English the whole time.
Why bother learning Thai or Hindi, when touts in Bangkok and Delhi can hook you up with everything you could possibly want or need - ???Very Cheap, My Friend, Special for You!???
The answer, of course, is that making the effort to speak a few words of the local language will lead to a more authentic, fulfilling, unique and memorable travel experience.
