I’m writing from behind the reception desk here at El Diablo Tranquilo hostel in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay.
Every day a new group of travelers arrives in this chill little beach town. Some are seasoned solo travelers, like the sea captain who cleaned out a group of earnest Swedes in Texas Hold ‘Em last night, or the Alaskan mountain guide who winters in South America. Others are backpackers, traveling in groups, red-faced under their massive mochillas.

For me, luxury travel usually means little more than clean sheets, hot water and black coffee in the morning. Camping on a beach or staying with local villagers makes me just as happy as sipping a cocktail next to an elegantly landscaped plunge pool.
But even though vagabonding travelers like me have been known to sneer at expensive luxury resorts and dismiss their pampered guests as out of touch with reality, I recognize that the luxury travel experience, done well, can be a beautiful thing.

I spent my first long term backpacking trip making backpacker mistakes that seem all too obvious in retrospect.
Yet judging by many other travelers I’ve met on the road, I wasn??t the only one learning the hard way.
Now that I??m older and wiser (ok, just older) I??ve learned the error of my ways and feel the need to pass on some sage advice.

Remember back in the old days, when music was actually stored on circular pieces of plastic?
This archaic technology was called a “compact disc” and seems quaint now in the time of gigabytes and iPods.
Now you can take your entire music collection (along with your neighbour’s) with you on the road. Which means there’s no excuse for not having a playlist ready for any travel situation you find yourself in.
