Almost since its inception, Israel has been in conflict. What role does war play in shaping the Jewish states’ identity?

I’m on a bus in Israel leaving the airport. It’s very early in the morning. The day is already so hot you can see waves of heat shimmering off the highway.

As I personally grew up in the south (Georgia) my family went to Destin, Florida just about every summer for a week on the beach. With white beaches and clear blue water, Destin is a major destination (no pun intended…) for southerners as well as tourists from all over the world. The Emerald Coast as it’s known as offers the vacationing visitor all of the activities that one can expect when going to the beach.

It happens surprisingly often that, when we are traveling and are confronted by paradisaical locations and amazing people, we are unable to enjoy ourselves entirely.

Travel has come a long way in the last century.

I’ve never been kayaking. I really want to go - but around my home in Colorado the only opportunities are in the rivers…which - in my opinion - are best navigated in a very large rubber raft with lots of cushion. I’m not sure it’s safe to be kayaking around these rocks and fast water through-fares.
I was looking at some information on sea kayaking..thinking this would be a better introduction to kayaking - calm coastal waters and bays…marine wildlife - no rocks or class-5 rapids. It looks like there are a few places that are great choices. Monterey Bay, Ogunquit Maine, or the San Juan Islands in Washington. I dug deeper into the San Juan Islands idea, as the pacific northwest is my favorite place to vacation. I found a ton of information and opportunities for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.

Cycling in Vietnam / Photo Shoot Into The Sun
It was eerily similar to swimming.
Water gushed through my helmet, down my hood, and into my face. My gloves and shorts were saturated, weighted sponges clutching my skin. Peeking out from worn sandals, my toes lapped up street water with each pedal stroke.

Go to the Annual Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival in Moab, Utah. Why? Because it benefits the Youth Garden Project and because it’s absolute hoot!
Each year around harvest time, locals and visitors gather on the runway at the old airport to see who can hit targets with flying pumpkins launched from all kinds of weird contraptions - giant sling shots, home made catapults, air cannons and things I can’t even name. These folks put some serious time and effort into it, too. Just wait until you see the size of these things!

I call it the People Chain. It’s like Facebook, offline, with edge.
The idea is to get random contacts in random places and see where it leads you. Might be a palace, might be a dark alley, but knowing anyone here who knows anyone there usually leads everywhere.
