Outer Banks fishing is legendary. The barrier islands stick so far out into the Atlantic that the Gulf Stream is very close to the shore. The sea and the sound mix here, allowing anglers to land both saltwater and freshwater species. You have to be a very unlucky fisher person to go home empty handed on the Outer Banks.

While headboats or private charters can leave you with an experience you’ll long remember, pier fishing is the way to go if you have children or newbies in your group. No sea sickness, no slippery decks, restrooms instead of heads and you can leave when they’ve had enough.

While every trip has the potential to include a traveler’s moment, it isn’t something that can be forced or expected.

As I waited for the monorail that would take me to my connecting gate at O’Hare Airport, the sun rose and painted red the lower edges of the Chicago sky.
It was the color of the elderly Sikh’s turban in Jaipur, the man who had sold me a bottle of water between handing out change to the pilgrims who passed his shop.

Balancing our scales is the surest way to get the correct perspective on life.

When I was a little boy one of my treats was to go to the local candy store and get my penny bag of candy.
I looked around at all the fabulous glass jars on the shelves and the aroma of all the flavors sent me on a trip of delights.
I then had to choose which jar of candy I would like. Tough decision for a six year old with only one penny to spend (well, it was over fifty years ago).

Losing your passport or bank cards on the road sucks. Not having the numbers accessible sucks even more.

For most of us our day to day life takes place in our homes, apartments and offices.
Each of these locations contain pretty much everything we own, need to survive and identify who we are. Somehow though, when we travel we are able to condense all these ???essentials??? into one or two small bags, carry them on our shoulders and hoist them onto trains.

I’d like to kick off this week’s edition of Tales From the Road with a quote from the stellar travel journalist Robert Kaplan, from a speech originally published in the Columbia Journalism Review:
“Journalism desperately needs a return to terrain, to the kind of firsthand, solitary discovery of local knowledge best associated with old-fashioned travel writing.

I have dreams of peddling leisurely through endless fields of blooming tulips. Windmills dot the horizon and water is always close by. Yes, I could go to Holland to satisfy this vacation fantasy or I could get a really authentic taste of tulip time in Holland, Michigan.
The settlement was established by a group of Dutch families in 1847 and hundreds followed them soon afterwards. Every fiber of Holland Michigan is steeped in Dutch heritage, so this is the real deal and not a marketing gimmick to bring in tourists.
Downtown Holland has an historic, yet vibrant feel, with street performers, art galleries, interesting shopping, plenty of great restaurants and frequent festivals. Without a doubt, the most celebrated annual event is Tulip Tme Festival!

When Walt Disney decided to build a theme park on swamp land in central Florida, he was probably the only one who had a clear vision of what the future would bring. What started out as a theme park plunked down in the middle of nowhere just a generation ago has now grown into one of the most visited and most celebrated family resorts in the world. And it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon!
Yes, it can be crowded. So if that’s a problem for you, be careful to choose a time to visit when most kids are in school. However, there’s not really an off-season in Orlando anymore. It has become a 4 season destination.
