How To Reconnect With Your Friends After The Journey

How To Reconnect With Your Friends After The Journey

When returning home from long trips abroad, I’m always surprised by how much has changed. Somehow, I seem to have a subconscious expectation that life was on pause ?? just waiting for me to come back and pick up where I left off.

Of course, that isn’t how it works.

I come back to find out that my circle of friends isn’t quite the same. Some people aren’t talking to each other anymore. Old couples have broken up, and new ones have formed. Old roommates have finished school and moved away.

Shelling near Marco Island Florida

Shelling near Marco Island Florida

One of my family’s favorite beach-type pass times is shelling. We hit the beach and drag great gobs of different shells back to the vacation rental - only to be forced to leave 90% behind because we cant pack them all - or they smell funny.

I did find out you can clean seashells so they don’t smell - but picking up “dead shells” is your best bet for this, although that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be ’stink free’.

7 Ways To Thank Someone For Staying At Their Home

Staying with a host family can be such a great experience, it’s hard to know how to thank your hosts properly.

7 Ways To Thank Someone For Staying At Their Home

The best memories of my recent trip to Ecuador come from the family in Quito that graciously opened their home to me.

After nearly two months of traveling, home-cooked meals and real beds with clean sheets were just what I needed. Plus, my host-family had lived in Quito for decades and were eager to share their city with me.

Does The Internet Cheapen Your Travel Experience?

Take a look at this website. The text, the picture above, the pictures below, the logo - all of them represent a separate request by your computer to a server hosted somewhere else on the planet.

With each request, a packet was generated that had to find a path in myriad of trails. It is very likely that each one of these requests took a different path. And it will be a whole new set of paths and destinations when you click away from here.

Found In Translation: Why Travel As A Teenager Is The Best Education

Found In Translation: Why Travel As A Teenager Is The Best Education

When I first arrived in Tokyo, I was sick, lost, and alone. I was also fifteen years old.

This was my first of many extended trips for work (I??m a model) and the decision to travel solo had been made at the last minute.

That evening, when I got off the bus in the wrong place after a severely delayed 13-hour flight, I had second thoughts, but ultimately traveling alone as a teenager turned out to be a seminal part of my youth.

The Secret To Staying Together On The Journey

The Secret To Staying Together On The Journey

So you??ve finally found the one.

Not only does he make you laugh, but he??s also just as enamored as you are with hopping around the globe in search of amazing adventures. No longer will you be working the long-distance relationship; instead you??ll now be part of a traveling twosome.

Sounds fantastic, doesn??t it? That is, until you find yourself not speaking on a twelve-hour bus ride or fighting your way up Kilimanjaro. There??s nothing like cancelled flights, squat toilets, overcrowded minibuses, or simply being stressed out in an unfamiliar place to expose our worst traits.

Tales from the Road: Afghanistan, Thailand, Canada, Nigeria

Tales from the Road: Afghanistan, Thailand, Canada, Nigeria

One of my favorite parts of the Best American Travel Writing anthology each year is series editor Jason Wilson’s foreword. With each new edition he finds a seemingly unrelated anecdote that somehow, unexpectedly, illustrates the point he is trying to make about the value of good travel writing.

This year is no exception: he begins with a report about a shark attack in New Jersey, an exceedingly rare event that led to the almost-instantaneous publication of helpful sidebars and advice boxes on How To Survive A Shark Attack in the local papers.
